 remembers David Pierce, PE, SE, who passed away in February 2022 after a courageous yearlong battle with cancer. David worked at PND for more than 30 years, beginning in Anchorage in 1982 in the very early days of the firm, and later helping to launch and lead the Seattle office from 1988 to 2012. David served as PND’s president from 2009 to 2012, diligently taking on that complex task after the retirement of our company’s co-founder and 30-year president, Dennis Nottingham. Given his longstanding collegial and professional friendship with  at , David assumed the role of chief  at AAC from 2012 to 2019 in Portland, Oregon. First and foremost, David enjoyed the practice of  and the art of using technical skills to solve the work-a-day challenges of the marine/coastal environment. At PND, David helped develop many challenging and recognizable projects across Alaska, the Pacific Northwest, and the United States, including Seattle’s Bell Street Pier, Shilshole Marina, and improvements to the port in his hometown of Bandon, Oregon. Under his guidance, PND leaned into the fierce effort to provide engineering support to Tacoma Narrows Constructors in the early days of building the second crossing over the Tacoma Narrows. Simplicity and practicality were trademark aspects of the  work generated under his professional seal. David consistently took special interest in mentoring and developing younger engineers and staff, teaching them to think through problems to find a solution to serve the client. He was a diehard fan of , both academically and athletically; he earned his  degree from OSU, and that’s where he met many of his future professional colleagues. He could always be distracted by a discussion of college football, particularly when his Beavers were in bowl game contention. PND owes a debt of gratitude to David’s service, and he will be missed by those who worked with and learned from him.
